Partial eclipse of the moon by Étienne Léopold Trouvelot, 1881-1882

Étienne Léopold Trouvelot captured the eerie beauty of a partial lunar eclipse in this stunning illustration, based on his actual observations from October 1874. Instead of a cold, scientific diagram, he rendered the moon's shadowed surface in rich, warm browns, contrasting sharply with the bright, cratered crescent peeking out from the darkness. Trouvelot created hundreds of these incredibly detailed drawings to share the wonders of the cosmos long before modern photography existed, though he is perhaps infamously remembered today for accidentally introducing the invasive gypsy moth to North America!
