Set Design for the Opera ‘The Tsar’s Bride’ by Ivan Bilibin, 1930

Imagine stepping into a giant’s log cabin that’s been decorated for a tsar. Ivan Bilibin, the artist who basically defined how Russian fairy tales look, created this set design for the opera 'The Tsar’s Bride'. You can see everything you’d need for a medieval Russian epic: a bear skin rug, battle axes, and a 'red corner' with a religious icon. Even though it was painted in 1930 after he left Russia, it captures the cozy, fiery warmth of traditional wooden architecture, mixing Art Nouveau curves with bold folk art patterns.
