Ship At Sea
Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky
1895
Aivazovsky was the ultimate master of the sea, painting over 6,000 marine landscapes in his lifetime, and this 1895 piece is a perfect example of his Romantic style. A lone sailing ship navigates the choppy, green-tinged waves near a massive, shadowy cliff, all under a vast, glowing sky that feels both peaceful and slightly ominous. He had an incredible memory for water, often painting from imagination rather than plein air, capturing the exact way light dances on the crest of a wave. It's no wonder he was considered one of the most celebrated Russian artists of his time, with fans ranging from the Tsar to the Pope!
