Diana and Callisto
Imagine the ultimate mythological scandal: Diana, the goddess of the hunt (center, holding the spear), has just discovered that her nymph Callisto is pregnant, breaking her sacred vow of chastity. On the left, the secret is out as Callisto is forcibly uncovered, while the rest of the bathing party reacts with shock and gossip. Jacob van Loo captures this dramatic Baroque moment with lush fabrics and expressive figures, turning an ancient myth into a tense scene that feels surprisingly modern.
