Vulcan Surprises Venus and Mars
Tintoretto was famous for his lightning-fast sketches, and this piece captures a mythological scandal with incredible drama. It depicts the moment Vulcan catches his wife Venus and her lover Mars in bed together—a classic tale of divine infidelity. The standing figure aggressively yanks back a sheet to expose the couple, while the reclining figures twist away in surprise. Tintoretto used these rapid charcoal studies to work out the poses and lighting for his massive canvas paintings, giving the scene a sense of frantic movement. It feels less like a static picture and more like a snapshot of a chaotic scene unfolding right in front of you.
