The Three Marys at the Tomb
ca 1425-1435
Jan van Eyck brings the biblical scene of the Three Marys visiting Christ's tomb to life with his signature microscopic detail. Instead of a barren desert, the background bursts with a bustling, fantasy cityscape that looks suspiciously like a 15th-century Flemish town. While the women arrive with their ointments in shock, the Roman guards are comically fast asleep, slumped over their weapons in various awkward poses. It's a masterclass in early Renaissance realism, where even the texture of the angel's wings and the soldiers' armor feels incredibly tangible.
