Eine Ermüdete Frau mit Zwei Kindern
1750-1761
Jean-Baptiste Greuze was basically the Spielberg of 18th-century France, specializing in emotional storytelling that made wealthy Parisians swoon. Here, he sketches a mother completely worn out, slumping over with her hand on her head while her two kids and a tiny cat demand her attention. You can see a spinning wheel on the left, hinting she's been working hard at the loom. It's a raw, messy look at real domestic life, drawn with quick ink washes that capture her fatigue perfectly. This kind of 'sentimental' art was huge back then, turning everyday struggles into high drama.
