Still Life with Fish, Vegetables, Gougères, Pots, and Cruets on a Table by Jean Siméon Chardin, 1769

Jean Siméon Chardin was the master of making the mundane look magnificent, and this late masterpiece from 1769 is a perfect example of French Academic realism. Instead of grand mythological scenes, he gives us a humble kitchen table featuring two large, hanging fish, fresh radishes with leafy greens, a wheel of cheese, and golden gougères (cheese puffs). The dark, moody background makes the textures pop—you can almost smell the fresh earth on the vegetables and the richness of the cheese. Chardin was famous for his painstakingly slow process, sometimes working on a single piece for months, and that care shows in the delicate rendering of the fish scales and rough cheese rind, signed right on the table edge.
