The Port of Honfleur
1864
Johan Barthold Jongkind was a major influence on the Impressionists, often painting en plein air with loose, energetic brushstrokes that capture the shifting light and atmosphere of the French coast. In this moody harbor scene, a tall ship dominates the left foreground, its dark hull contrasting sharply with the swirling, cloudy sky that takes up most of the canvas. The scene feels alive with the movement of the water and the wind, serving as a direct precursor to the style that Monet and others would later make famous. Jongkind's signature and the date 1875 are visible in the bottom right corner, though he painted many versions of Honfleur throughout his career.
