Cloud Study (ca. 1821) 5
John Constable was absolutely obsessed with the sky, often painting outdoors in Hampstead Heath to capture fleeting atmospheric changes. This swirling mass of cumulus clouds, created around 1821, is one of his famous 'skying' studies where he raced against time and the weather. Instead of a polished, perfect scene, you get the raw, breathless energy of a storm rolling in, with thick brushstrokes that make the clouds feel like they're actually moving. It's a perfect example of Romanticism's love for nature's wild, untamed beauty, proving that sometimes the background is more interesting than the foreground.
