Bay-winged bunting
1827-1838
John James Audubon went to extreme lengths to capture birds in action, often wiring up freshly killed specimens to pose them dramatically. Here, a Bay-winged Bunting stands alert on a rugged log, seemingly inspecting a towering prickly pear cactus bursting with yellow and white blooms. This plate comes from his legendary 'The Birds of America,' a massive project that required him to travel the wilderness and work with engraver Robert Havell in London to produce these life-sized masterpieces. The contrast between the delicate bird and the spiky, vibrant cactus perfectly captures Audubon's flair for mixing scientific detail with artistic drama.
