Esquimaux curlew

John James Audubon

1827-1838

Esquimaux curlew by John James Audubon, 1827-1838

John James Audubon captured the striking Esquimaux Curlew in this stunning plate from his legendary 'Birds of America' series, showcasing the male in mid-stride and the female resting on the mossy ground. Notice the incredibly detailed, mottled brown feathers and those distinctively long, curved beaks designed for probing the tundra. Sadly, this beautiful bird is now critically endangered and possibly extinct, making Audubon's vivid documentation from the 1830s one of the most poignant records of a species we might have lost forever.
