Northern Harrier by John James Audubon, 1827-1838

Meet the 'Jager,' a fierce seabird captured by the legendary naturalist John James Audubon, standing proudly on a grassy mound with icy Arctic peaks in the distance. Audubon named it 'Jager' (German for hunter) because these birds are notorious pirates of the sky, stealing food right out of the mouths of other seabirds! This hand-colored engraving comes from his massive masterpiece *The Birds of America*, where he insisted on showing animals in dynamic, natural habitats rather than stiff scientific poses.
