알프스 풍경 by John Ruskin, 1844-49

John Ruskin is best known as the Victorian era's most influential art critic, but he was also a relentless observer of the natural world who believed artists should paint exactly what they see. This loose, atmospheric study of an Alpine valley captures the rugged texture of sheer cliffs and the delicate scatter of pine trees with incredible speed. Created during his extensive travels in the 1840s, the sketch reflects his obsession with capturing the geological 'truth' of nature, a philosophy that heavily inspired the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. You can almost feel the crisp mountain air in the cool washes of blue and grey that define the distant hills.
