Arab Woman
1905-6
John Singer Sargent captured this mysterious figure during his travels through the Middle East around 1905, completely obsessed with how sunlight played across heavy fabrics. Instead of painting a detailed portrait, he used loose, sweeping watercolor washes to suggest the form of a woman wrapped in a white and gold burnous, her face hidden in shadow. The vibrant blues of the sky contrast beautifully with the warm ochres of the architecture, showing off his incredible ability to paint light and atmosphere on the fly. It's a perfect example of how he treated his travel sketches not just as studies, but as finished masterpieces of light and color.
