View from Mount Pilatus by John Singer Sargent, 1870

A young John Singer Sargent, just fourteen years old, captured this breathtaking Swiss mountain vista during a family trip in 1870. The delicate watercolor washes transform the jagged, snow-capped peaks into a dreamy haze of purple and blue, contrasting beautifully with the warm, golden glow of the sky. Dark, rugged pine trees anchor the left foreground, reminding us of the wild, untamed nature of the Alps. It is amazing to see such masterful control of light and atmosphere from an artist who was barely out of childhood.
