Pinhal, Purtud
While John Singer Sargent is best known for painting stiff, wealthy socialites in oil, this watercolor reveals his wilder, looser side. Painted in the Italian Alps near Purtud, it captures dappled sunlight filtering through a dense pine forest with incredible speed and energy. You can almost smell the pine needles and feel the cool shade just by looking at the quick, fluid brushstrokes that dance across the paper. It serves as a perfect visual travel diary, capturing fleeting moments of light that a slow-drying oil painting simply couldn't keep up with.
