Sich ankleidendes Mädchen by John Sloan, 1914

John Sloan, a founding member of the Ashcan School, loved capturing the unglamorous, real-life moments of working-class New Yorkers. In this 1914 sketch, a young woman sits on the edge of a bed, focused intently on dressing, her hair tumbling down in a messy, natural way. The loose, scribbly lines of the red chalk give the scene a wonderful sense of movement and immediacy, as if Sloan quickly jotted down a private moment he witnessed. It’s a perfect example of how he turned ordinary, everyday actions into compelling art.
