Faces Pl.04
1914-1918
Max Beckmann served as a medical orderly during World War I until a nervous breakdown forced him out, and this frantic scene is his raw, unfiltered reaction to the trauma. Instead of heroic soldiers, we see a chaotic ward filled with exhausted nurses and broken bodies, including a slumped figure being carried and another lying vulnerable on a table. The jagged, scribbled lines capture the panic and pain of the era perfectly, stripping away any romanticism of war to show the messy, painful reality of the operating room. This piece is from his 'Faces' portfolio, essentially a grim visual diary of human suffering.
