1914
Juan Gris invites us to a Parisian café table, but everything has been rearranged by a playful geometrician. In this 1914 masterpiece of Synthetic Cubism, a bottle of wine (hinted at by the letters 'VI') and a blue guitar are flattened and reassembled against a backdrop of pink striped wallpaper. Unlike the earlier, monochromatic Cubism of Picasso, Gris bursts with color and texture, mimicking the look of wood grain and pasted paper to create a tactile, puzzle-like composition. He was known as the 'intellectual' of the Cubist movement, bringing a mathematical clarity to the chaotic fragmentation of reality.
