Le bol

Juan Gris

Le bol by Juan Gris, 1924

Juan Gris transforms a humble bowl and book into a vibrant geometric puzzle using warm earth tones and a striking splash of blue. The thick, white outlines make the objects look like paper cutouts, a hallmark of his Synthetic Cubist style where he built images up like collages. Gris famously joked that while Cézanne made a cylinder out of a bottle, he made a bottle out of a cylinder—starting with abstract math to create real objects. It’s a brilliant example of how Cubism wasn't just about breaking things apart, but putting them back together in a new, colorful way.
