Juan Gris, often called the 'Third Cubist' after Picasso and Braque, turns a simple tabletop scene into a vibrant geometric puzzle in this 1915 masterpiece. Notice how the newspaper fragment and the glass with its vertical stripes seem to float and merge with the dotted fabric and leafy green background. Working during the chaos of World War I, Gris brought a calm, mathematical precision to Synthetic Cubism. He famously boasted that while Cézanne made cylinders out of bottles, he made bottles out of cylinders, completely rebuilding reality from scratch!
