Autoritratto
c. 1630
Judith Leyster confidently poses with her brush and palette, looking as if she just paused mid-stroke to greet you. She wears a stunning, oversized lace collar that screams 17th-century Dutch fashion, while behind her, a canvas shows a joyous fiddler mid-performance. For centuries, her brilliant work was mistakenly credited to Frans Hals, but a tiny star signature hidden in her paintings finally gave her the credit she deserved. As one of the few female masters of the Dutch Golden Age, she boldly painted herself not as a delicate muse, but as a working professional at the top of her game.
