风景 by Jules Dupré, 19th century

Jules Dupré, a rebel of the Barbizon school, dragged his easel into the French countryside to capture nature's raw moodiness. In this scene, a massive, turbulent sky full of billowing white clouds threatens to crush the tiny thatched cottages and grazing cows below. This dramatic clash between the bright heavens and the dark, shadowy earth is pure Romanticism, making nature feel both beautiful and a little bit dangerous. These painters were the original 'en plein air' artists, ditching the studio to paint real landscapes and paving the way for the Impressionists.
