The Big Hats
1917
Jules Pascin captures a trio of fashionable women in 1917, their massive, feather-adorned hats practically stealing the show from their delicate, elongated figures. The loose, sketchy lines and soft washes of color give the scene a fleeting, almost gossipy quality, as if we've just stumbled upon a quiet moment between friends. Pascin, a Bulgarian-born artist who found fame in Paris and New York, was famous for his candid portrayals of women, often highlighting the bohemian lifestyle of the era. Those enormous hats were a real fashion trend of the time, sometimes so wide they required women to tilt their heads just to see!
