Oxfordshire Landscape
1944
Paul Nash, famous for his haunting World War I battlefields, turns his gaze to the quiet English countryside in 1944. A winding road snakes through fields of dusty rose and ochre, rendered in loose, watery washes that make the landscape feel like a fleeting memory. Even while serving as an official war artist during the Second World War, Nash found moments to capture these serene, almost abstract rural scenes. The sketchy, energetic lines give the whole composition a dreamy quality, as if the land itself is holding its breath.
