Reclining Figure by Julio González, 1936

Julio González, a pioneer of iron sculpture who actually taught Picasso how to weld, created this playful 1936 sketch as a blueprint for a 3D form. Titled 'Personnage allongé' (Reclining Figure), it completely abandons realistic human anatomy for a vibrant puzzle of red, yellow, and green geometric blocks and sweeping curves. Instead of a body, we see a structural study that looks like a colorful piece of modern architecture. This drawing captures the moment where Cubism moved off the canvas and into the third dimension, planning out a sculpture that would likely be forged from metal.
