Progetto per scultura by Julio González, 1935

Julio González, a pioneer of Cubist sculpture and the man who actually taught Picasso how to weld, created this sketch as a blueprint for a 3D work. Titled 'Projet pour sculpture' (Project for Sculpture), the 1935 drawing looks like a jagged, colorful skeleton of a figure. Sharp angles and geometric shards of green, orange, and blue dance around a central vertical axis, mimicking the way he would bend and forge iron rods. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the mind of an artist who turned industrial materials into high art, signed simply 'J.G.' at the bottom.
