Akt VI

Katsushika Hokusai

1806

Akt VI by Katsushika Hokusai, 1806

Long before he painted the famous Great Wave, Hokusai was busy illustrating kabuki theater, and this piece is a prime example. It depicts Act VI from the 'Chushingura' (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers), a story about 47 samurai avenging their lord that was basically the 'Star Wars' of 19th-century Japan. On the veranda, the tension is palpable: a sword is raised high, a man crouches in defense, and another frantically reads a scroll. Meanwhile, in the background, travelers carry a palanquin through peaceful rice fields, completely ignoring the samurai chaos happening just a few feet away. It’s a brilliant mix of intense drama and serene landscape.
