Gods of Good Fortune by Kawanabe Kyōsai, 1800s

Kawanabe Kyōsai, often called the 'Demon of Painting' for his wild energy, brings a whimsical touch to these traditional deities. On the left, the rotund Hotei (god of happiness) reclines with a joyful grin, his large belly taking center stage. Opposite him, the elongated head of Fukurokuju (god of wisdom) dominates the right page, peering down with a long white beard and tall hat. The loose, expressive brushstrokes capture a playful moment between these two of the Seven Lucky Gods, proving that even divine figures can have a sense of humor.
