Rats and Gourd by Kawanabe Kyōsai, ca. 1887

Kawanabe Kyōsai, a 19th-century eccentric known as the 'Demon of Painting,' fills this scene with playful chaos. Two rats have stumbled upon a massive gourd; one sits atop the shell looking wide-eyed and alert, while the other has already burrowed inside to gorge on the seeds. Above the tall, swaying grass, a bird dives toward white hibiscus flowers, creating a dynamic triangle of action. Kyōsai was a master of capturing animal spirits, and his quick, confident brushstrokes make these little thieves feel incredibly alive and ready to scurry away at any moment.
