Mona Lisa
1503-1506
Leonardo da Vinci spent years obsessing over this portrait, carrying it with him until his death and constantly tweaking the layers of glaze. The subject's enigmatic smile and crossed hands sit before a dreamy, winding landscape that seems to melt into the horizon. It's the world's most famous painting, housed in the Louvre, and was even stolen in 1911 by a museum employee who hid it in his apartment for two years! The visible crackling on the surface, called craquelure, shows its incredible age, while the lack of eyebrows reflects a high-fashion trend of Renaissance Florence.
