Saint John the Baptist
from 1513 until 1516
Leonardo da Vinci's final painting features a mysterious figure emerging from a pitch-black background, pointing a single finger heavenward with a playful, almost flirtatious smile. Art historians have long debated whether this enigmatic Saint John was originally meant to be the pagan god Bacchus, given the androgynous features that seem completely out of place for a traditional religious prophet. It hangs in the Louvre today, sharing the same famous, smoky 'sfumato' technique as the Mona Lisa, making the figure look like they're glowing in the dark.
