寒鴉図巻(全巻)絹本27.1X113.2北京故宮
Li Cheng was the undisputed master of 'desolate' landscapes, and this scroll captures a freezing winter day perfectly. You can almost feel the chill looking at the snow-dusted riverbank and the gnarled, leafless trees—famous for their 'crab claw' branches—that twist dramatically into the sky. A flock of crows huddles together for warmth, creating a poignant scene of life persisting in the harsh cold. The painting is flanked by elegant calligraphy, including bold characters on the right praising the piece for its 'superb natural truth,' the ultimate compliment in traditional Chinese aesthetics.
