小寒林図巻-題跋

小寒林図巻-題跋 by Li Cheng

Think of this as a VIP review written in ink centuries ago! This piece is a calligraphy inscription (colophon) for a scroll attributed to the Song Dynasty master Li Cheng, famous for his misty, 'cold forest' landscapes. The bold, sweeping characters praise 'Yingqiu' (Li Cheng's hometown, used here as his nickname) for his genius in capturing the chilling, moving atmosphere of autumn. The smaller text on the left is signed by Wang Duo, a rockstar calligrapher of the late Ming dynasty, who wrote this appreciation on a winter night. The red seals scattered around act like a historical guestbook, showing the many collectors who have cherished this work over the years.
