Autorretrato

Lovis Corinth

1923

Autorretrato by Lovis Corinth, 1923

Lovis Corinth drew this gritty self-portrait in 1923, just two years before he died, and you can really feel the weight of his life in those heavy, dark shadows. After a massive stroke in 1911 left his right hand partially paralyzed, he had to relearn how to draw, which accidentally birthed this wild, shaky Expressionist style. Instead of hiding his physical struggle, he leaned into it, creating a face that looks less like a polite portrait and more like a raw, emotional snapshot of a man staring down his own mortality.
