Paesaggio del Walchensee
1919
Lovis Corinth bought a house on the shores of Lake Walchensee in 1919, seeking refuge from the turmoil of World War I and a stroke that had partially paralyzed him. This energetic work captures the wild Bavarian landscape that became his final muse, with frantic, scratchy lines that scream of raw Expressionist emotion. He would paint and draw this view obsessively until his death at the lake in 1925, proving that a desperate need for peace can fuel the most passionate art.
