The Holy Kinship

The Holy Kinship by Lucas Cranach the Elder, 1509

Imagine the ultimate holy family reunion, but make it gossipy. Lucas Cranach the Elder packed three generations of biblical figures into this 1509 masterpiece, with Mary and Saint Anne sharing the spotlight while the husbands look on from a balcony like they're judging the parenting. The toddler Jesus reaches for an apple held by Mary—a cheeky reference to the Garden of Eden and original sin—while other holy children play with a toy cart nearby. Cranach even signed the work on a little plaque on the column, a classic move for the artist who was basically the court painter and visual propagandist of the Reformation era.
