Peacock Flower

Peacock Flower by Maria Sibylla Merian, 1719

Maria Sibylla Merian was a rockstar of the scientific world long before women were welcome in the lab. In this detailed 1719 plate, she maps out the entire life cycle of a moth on the 'Peacock Flower' (Flos Pavonis). Look closely and you'll see the story of transformation: a hungry green caterpillar crawling up the stem, a brown chrysalis hiding among the fern-like leaves, and the final adult moth taking flight near the vibrant yellow blooms. Merian was one of the first naturalists to observe metamorphosis firsthand, proving that insects didn't just spontaneously generate from mud—a mind-blowing concept in the Baroque era!
