Christus vor Pilatus by Martin Schongauer, c. 1480

Pontius Pilate sits on his throne in this dramatic scene, casually washing his hands in a basin while Jesus stands bound and crowned with thorns before him. Schongauer fills the composition with chaotic energy—soldiers mock Christ, servants pour water, and even two little dogs bark at the bottom of the steps. You can spot the artist's initials 'M t S' cleverly hidden on the curved platform at the bottom, a signature move for this master printmaker who famously influenced a young Albrecht Dürer.
