The Entombment by Martin Schongauer, c. 1480

Martin Schongauer was a master engraver who paved the way for Albrecht Dürer, and this dramatic scene shows exactly why. It depicts the sorrowful moment Christ's body is being lowered into the tomb, surrounded by a crowd of grieving figures. Notice the incredible, almost painterly detail in the heavy drapery and the discarded crown of thorns on the ground. Schongauer's prints were so famous and widely distributed that a young Michelangelo actually copied his engravings to learn how to draw!
