Mary Cassatt was basically the original paparazzi of the nursery, and the only American invited to exhibit with the French Impressionists. In this sketch, she captures a chubby toddler perched on a lap, viewed from behind with a focus on the soft curves of their back. The loose, scratchy lines give it a sense of urgency, as if she was trying to freeze the moment before the baby wiggled away. It’s a sweet, intimate look at the private world of women and children that she made her signature subject.
