Cueillant des fruits
circa 1893
Mary Cassatt channels her obsession with Japanese woodblock prints in this sunny scene of fruit picking. A woman in a blue floral dress stretches high to grab fruit from a vine, while below, a mother in pink holds up a naked, chubby toddler who is reaching up with serious determination. Cassatt was the only American in the French Impressionist circle, and she created this series of color prints to show off her skills, moving away from oil paints to capture the flat, decorative patterns she loved.
