La lampada
1890-1891
Mary Cassatt created this intimate scene during her bold experiment with Japanese woodblock prints in the early 1890s. Notice the large, fringed lampshade dominating the top of the composition—it's a brilliant nod to the flat, decorative styles she admired from ukiyo-e artists. The woman, captured in a quiet, domestic moment with her fan and teacup, reflects Cassatt's lifelong dedication to portraying the private lives of women. She actually printed these herself, wrestling with the difficult aquatint process to get those soft, pastel colors just right!
