The Carousel
Step right up to Max Beckmann's chaotic carnival ride, where the simple joy of a carousel transforms into a dizzying nightmare of Expressionist distortion. The figures—riders, onlookers, and wooden horses—are crammed together in a swirling vortex, their faces ranging from manic grins to hollow, skull-like stares. Beckmann created this during the turbulent Weimar Republic years, capturing the frenetic, almost suffocating energy of a society trying to distract itself after the trauma of World War I. It’s less a funfair attraction and more a psychological pressure cooker, spinning wildly out of control.
