Seduction
1923
Don't let the title fool you—Max Beckmann’s 1923 woodcut 'Seduction' feels less like a romance and more like a psychological thriller. A massive, shadowy figure dominates the foreground, hunched over in a heavy, angular mass of black ink that seems to swallow the light. In the background, a second face peers out with a look of intense, almost trapped scrutiny, framed by jagged, frantic lines. Beckmann, a veteran of World War I, used this harsh Expressionist style to strip away polite society's veneer, revealing the raw, often ugly emotions bubbling underneath the surface of the Weimar Republic.
