Männlicher Akt (Recto) by Michelangelo, c. 1560

Even in his mid-80s, Michelangelo couldn't stop obsessing over the human form. Created around 1560, just a few years before his death, this loose and energetic sketch of a hunched male figure shows the master's hand still exploring anatomy and movement. His style here is much freer and more abstract than his famous Sistine Chapel figures, reflecting a lifetime of mastery. The title 'recto' is a fancy art world term telling us there's likely another hidden drawing on the back of this very sheet of paper, waiting to be discovered!
