Nymphs and a Satyr (Amor Vincit Omnia)

Nymphs and a Satyr (Amor Vincit Omnia) by Nicolas Poussin, c. 1625-1627

Painted by the French Baroque master Nicolas Poussin around 1627, this lush forest scene is a playful take on classical mythology. The little god of love, Cupid, stands triumphantly before a kneeling satyr, gently touching his face to prove that love really does conquer all. Nearby, nude nymphs look on in various states of relaxation and surprise, completely disarmed by the chubby cherub's power. The dramatic lighting and idealized figures are classic hallmarks of Poussin's style, which would go on to influence generations of artists.
