Die Blinden von Jericho
1650-1700
Nicolas Poussin brings a sense of theatrical order to this biblical miracle, depicting Jesus healing the blind men of Jericho. Notice how the figures are arranged almost like actors on a stage, with Jesus in pink robes reaching out as the focal point against a rugged, detailed landscape featuring a hilltop fortress. Poussin was the leader of French Classicism, favoring logic and structure over the chaotic emotion typical of the Baroque era. Interestingly, he painted this late in his life while living in Rome, and it remains a highlight of the Louvre's collection today.
