Two quail at full moon
1900 - 1936
Ohara Koson was a master of the shin-hanga movement, which revitalized traditional Japanese woodblock printing in the early 20th century. In this serene scene, two plump quail huddle together beneath a giant, glowing full moon, surrounded by swaying silvergrass and autumn leaves. Koson was famous for his incredibly detailed and lifelike depictions of birds, often spending hours observing them in nature to capture their exact postures and feather patterns. These prints were so popular in the West that they helped spark a massive craze for Japanese art in Europe and America during the 1920s and 30s.
